Between In-Person and Online Qur'an Classes

Learning the Qur'an is a continuous process. Every single day, millions of new people are exposed to the Word of Allah. As long as mankind exists, people will always need the guidance of this Book, and that guidance cannot truly be attained except through continuous learning.

This is what inspired us to discuss which medium of learning the Qur'an is more beneficial.

Online or In-Person?

These two methods are among the strongest and most common ways of learning the Qur'an. However, as we know, every excellent method has its own advantages and disadvantages. So, follow along as we carefully analyze both.

Online Classes

The first question to ask is about the uniqueness and permissibility of learning the Qur'an online. Numerous scholars have agreed that it is permissible. Furthermore, learning the Qur'an online still carries immense rewards. In fact, it is one of the fastest ways of reaching and teaching learners across the globe.

Whenever there is a beneficial technological advancement that does not contradict Islamic principles, Muslims are encouraged to make good use of it. Years ago, online platforms designed for classroom management, screen sharing, and webcam communication did not exist. At that time, very few people imagined how Muslims living in countries with few or no qualified Qur'an teachers would cope. Many considered it almost impossible.

Today, technology has made it possible for students to connect with qualified teachers regardless of where they live.

Can Someone Memorize the Qur'an Online?

This is an excellent question that deserves a careful answer.

A dedicated student possesses determination. The same goal a person can achieve in one environment can also be achieved in another, provided there is commitment and perseverance. For example, a millionaire in Kenya can still become a millionaire in America, even though the value of the currency is significantly different.

What I mean is that Qur'an memorization is certainly possible online, but it is best achieved by students who remain committed and overcome every obstacle in the learning process, no matter how difficult it may be.

However, achieving this requires a professional institute that tracks students' progress, monitors attendance, and holds learners accountable when they neglect their responsibilities. These are forms of discipline that many reputable online institutes have successfully implemented.

In-Person Designated Maqra'

Most of us who studied the Qur'an through this method will agree that we have experienced its beauty.

This method involves being physically present with your Shaykh and learning through what is known as talqīn—a systematic process in which the teacher recites repeatedly while the student carefully follows and imitates the recitation.

This is the natural way Qur'anic learning has traditionally been conducted. However, it is mainly beneficial for those who have qualified scholars available in their locality. Many important aspects of knowledge are acquired through this method.

Since the Noble Prophet ﷺ—whose way of teaching and learning is the finest example—taught the Qur'an in this manner, we naturally give this method greater preference. Nevertheless, this does not mean we should condemn online learning, especially in places where qualified Qur'an teachers are limited or unavailable.

Accepting Payment for Teaching the Qur'an

Finally, the issue of accepting payment for teaching and learning the Qur'an, whether online or in person, is considered permissible by the majority of scholars (Jumhūr al-'Ulamā').

This means that if there are many qualified Qur'an teachers in a particular region, and some of them choose to charge fees according to the value they place on their services, there is no problem with that. Students who cannot afford those fees may attend other scholars who teach free of charge. In this way, Islamic knowledge continues to spread, which is the ultimate objective.

However, if you are the only qualified Qur'an teacher in a particular area and you believe your services deserve higher payment, many scholars recommend that you remain patient and teach without charge if people genuinely cannot afford your fees. This helps ensure that sincere learners are not discouraged from seeking knowledge and that the religion continues to spread.

We ask Almighty Allah to continue guiding us to the Straight Path. Āmīn.
